A few more from pettiskirt fun

This one is my personal favorite because it was an accidential capture.
She said, "I picked these for you, Mom," and I turned around and snapped.
It brings tears to my eyes because I feel like it really captures the essence of Riley and her sweet personality.

Fun with Pettiskirts and Good Friends

Riley and I got together with some great friends who have daughters who are Riley's age. We brought the new pettiskirts out to play in the fields and at the park. Here are a few of my favorites.
The girls had so much fun laughing, playing and twirling!

Movie Night

Monday nights are family movie nights in our house. Basically, it's an excuse for us to cuddle up on the floor in front of the TV and eat some popcorn. I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Mikey and Riley were really into Scooby Doo...Harley was more interested in the popcorn.

Happy Birthday Mikey

We celebrated Mike's 29th birthday on Saturday. First with a fun family party where the kids all came over and played. Riley was very excited to get to play with her cousins.

Then, day turned to night and we had some silliness with friends. It was a great day. Happy birthday to the man who has taught me a lot about life, love and the importance of laughter. I love you! Hope you had a wonderful birthday.

This too shall pass

There is nothing as sweet as being comforted by a 3 year old. It's no secret. I'm sad. My life is changing and things are unbelievably hard right now. I'm angry and I'm confused and I'm just plain sad.

Saturday afternoon, I was alone in my room. Mike was at work and Riley was napping. I laid down in my bed and just cried. I cried until my pillow was soaked. After a while, I looked up and there stood my sweet little girl. So innocent. Her eyes still heavy from her nap.
"Mommy, why are you sad?" she asked. "Mommy is just having a bad day," I replied.

That's when she did it. "Look," she said, pointing to the window. "Look, Mom. Look how bright the sun is shining through. There is no time to be sad, Mom. It will be dark soon," She then grabbed my hand. "We need to go out and play."

Logically, I know that in her 3-year old mind, she was literally talking about that day. "Mom, get your hiney out of bed and take me outside to play before it gets dark."

Her words were so profound and exactly what I needed to hear. There is no need to be sad over things you cannot change. Rejoice in the good things and go out and play in the sunshine while you still have the chance.

With that, I give you the last picture my family took together. It was last Thanksgiving and it was an amazing day...the last time when we were all together. So, on the advice of a wise 3-year old, this is how I choose to remember my family, not as we are today.

I can't promise that I'll always be positive, but I can promise that I'll try.

Stories of Hope

Those of you who know me know that I am seriously passionate about three things: My Family & Friends, Breast Cancer Awareness and Photography. I am blessed that I currently work in a job that lets me combine two of those things (photography and breast cancer awareness) in a way that will honor the third (my mom). At The Rose, I am starting a new project to honor breast cancer survivors through photography. Of course, you know who I drug in to be my first guinea pig. Luckily, Riley was there so there wasn't too much kicking and screaming on Nannie's part.

I am honored to present one of our first Stories of Hope, Marie Mahoney - 17 year breast cancer survivor. These are just a few of the photos we took that day. I'll post more later.

The Rose is the Houston area's leading 501(c)(3) non-profit breast cancer organization providing mammography screening, diagnosis, early access to treatment and support to all women
regardless of their ability to pay. For more information visit www.TheRose.org.

A Reminder

Today we were driving home from school and got stuck in traffic. Riley gave a big, "JEEZ!" and rolled her eyes and put her hands on her hips. I giggled and looked back and said, "Why did you say, 'Jeez'"? She then replied, "because you say it all the time, Mommy. I want to be just like you." It was the small reminder that I needed as I deal with the daily ins and outs.
It reminded me of this picture that I made a couple of years ago and hung on my desk.
